"Not as Happy as Pigs in Muck"
Discover The Real Truth
Compassion in World Farming has been filming undercover in pig farms across Europe for 18 months. What we found was shocking – an apparent disregard for the laws to protect pig welfare and political failure to enforce the laws – putting millions of pigs at risk of profound suffering.
Compassion launched the graphic investigation film at a press conference in Brussels on 21 January. The results were amazing – we have received TV, radio and internet coverage across 12 European countries to date. This important coverage has already raised awareness among policy makers.
The law that’s being ignored
In the barren world of the factory farm, pigs quickly become bored and frustrated and they often bite each other’s tails. Instead of providing their pigs with a more interesting environment, many farmers simply cut off, or "dock", their tails.
European Union law bans routine tail-docking. But a report by the European Food Safety Authority found that over 90% of Europe’s pigs are tail-docked.
European Union law requires that pigs are given straw or similar rooting material so that they can investigate and forage. But our investigation found a widespread lack of environmental enrichment.
Change is urgently needed for Europe’s pigs.

Pig Business in Westminster
Thank you so much for taking the time to invite your MP to attend the Westminster screening of Tracy Worcester’s Pig Business.
More than 30 MPs attended the event at Westminster, along with high profile supporters, actress Miranda Richardson, food writer Tom Parker-Bowles and environmentalist and prospective political candidate, Zac Goldsmith. The event was a great success, chaired by Compassion director, John Callaghan, with panelists from the science and animal welfare fields sharing their expert understanding of the problems surrounding intensive pig farming. Speakers included our Chief Policy Advisor, Peter Stevenson, Richard Young and Helen Browning of the Soil Association and Helen Rimmer of Friends of the Earth.
Print and online media coverage for the event included: Daily Mail, Daily Telegraph, London Evening Standard, Farmers Guardian and The Ecologist. Your support has been important in the fight to ensure better labeling of pig meat and ultimately to end the factory farming of pigs.
