The cost of the average Christmas lunch is estimated at £14 per person but the ingredients could have flown 84,612 miles producing the same amount of greenhouse gas from planes as 50,000 three-bedroom semis in a year. In 2004, the UK sent 744 million Christmas cards; if they were all recycled, it would have saved 248,000 trees. In 2005, only 82 million cards were recycled but it diverted 1,630 tonnes of rubbish from landfill sites. In 2001 only 1.2 million of the 7.5 million Christmas tress bought were recycled; the rest created enough rubbish to fill the Albert Hall in London three times

Since 2004, Sébastien Genest presides France Nature Environnement. It explains what FNE and gives us keys to understanding the specificity and richness of associations grouped behind the hedgehog.
France Nature Environnement is probably the least known of the great actors of environmental protection. Yet the association is among the activists of the first hour. How do you explain that?

The founders of France Nature Environment are fully involved in the fighting at the time but not necessarily taking the time to enhance their action. Today, the effectiveness of our action depends on proper communication. It is to be identified by citizens to weigh fully the democratic debate.

If you had to summarize in brief FNE,
how about you?

It is a network of associations that is lobbying for the right French, European and international moving in the direction of greater environmental protection.

What are the strengths of this movement?

It is a network whose expertise is widely recognized, consisting of citizens committed volunteers, whose work is characterized by both a challenge by the consultation.
